Oci-One Kanubi (Richard Hopley) with SouthWind at the Silver Spur Saloon; Love Valley, NC
What can I bring to your band?
My name is Richard Hopley. I live in Ardmore, in Winston-Salem, NC. When I have no active project I seek the bass position in a cover band within 30 miles of home, to gig in the Piedmont Triad for fun and pay. I'd like to gig anywhere from two evenings per month to a max of eight nights in the busiest months.

Various local musicians say I'm a good player. I stay in the pocket and play lines appropriate to the tunes, including any signature bass parts. I sing high harmony but not lead vocals.

I'll play anything but metal, lounge music, or show tunes. I prefer modern alternative rock, classic rock, classic R&B, and even beach music, and I really like the modern R&B out of New Orleans and Austin. A little Nashville and modern pop is OK with me. I could work in an acoustic pop act (like Avett Bros, Mumford). I love the blues, but I doubt its commercial potential around here.

I've known hundreds of pop, R&B, rock, and country tunes, but I'd need to brush up on most of them. I can learn 10 or 12 new songs per week on bass, though memorizing harmonies and lyrics takes me longer. I can manage a 100-song playlist of tight arrangements, but I watch and I listen to everyone in the band, so I can play many more if the arrangements are loose and the leader is good at cueing the changes.

I am always on time or early; I always have the material prepared; I always bring the equipment I need (including a spare of just about everything). I drink very rarely, and don't do drugs, smoke, or flirt with women at the gig. I am a sideman and I avoid band drama; the lead singer(s) pick the songs, I learn them and play them, and I don't try to tell anyone else how to play.

I am retired, so I can gig or rehearse any afternoon or evening. I hope to rehearse only once a week (more frequently at start-up would be OK): tell me the tunes and keys and I'll learn them at home, then come to practice ready to support the singer(s) and the lead player(s) as they develop their parts.

I play Fender Precision Basses through 500 watt Ampeg heads and Markbass, Fender and/or Carvin cabinets. I own a 4,000 watt PA system controlled with a 16-channel, 8-bus board. My basement is adequate for practice, and I have a Mercedes Sprinter van in crew-cab configuration (five belted seats plus lots of cargo space) with a trailer hitch.

I am not an artist, but I can turn someone else's graphics into a website, like this one. I've made decent demo recordings of the Whitehorse tunes (listen, below). I used the same recorder for the Cool Hand and ZB Rhythm Project recordings below but those rooms had really bad acoustics. I have also prepared CD packaging from stock images (see Ten After Ten and SouthWind, below).

Of the nine bands listed below, there are recordings by all but The Five Dimensions, but three of them (Whitehorse, Cool Hand, and the ZB Rhythm Project) did not last long enough to ever play out. The Five Dimensions, Whetstone, Ten After Ten, Southwind, and Retrospect were all well-received on stage, and the recordings of Whetstone, Ten After Ten, and Southwind are of pretty good quality.

To recap: I am issue-free, talented, professional in attitude, experienced, easy-going, have good equipment and transportation, and like learning new songs. I feel responsible to my bandmates, so I am dependable, loyal, and work hard to really know the material and hold up my end. You can judge by my inclusion of sketchy recordings (Cool Hand and ZBRP) that I am honest and up front.

My back story
My late father, US Naval Academy class of '42, was graduated a semester early, two weeks after the December 7 Pearl Harbor attack, and sent to a cruiser in the Pacific. Mid-war he applied for submarine school, and finished the war in subs, participating in several famous operations which have been dramatised by Hollywood. He had been a gifted athlete in highschool and at the Academy, playing football and holding several Academy track records for decades after he graduated, and he sang bass in church choirs and barbershop quartets.

My mother was equally remarkable; the war-widow of a U.S. Marine Corps pilot, she became a pilot herself before she married Dad, and remained, until her death at 96, a clever, witty, and personable companion whenever I have the opportunity to hang out with her.

I am a "boomer", born in Washington, DC, on November 30, 1946. As a pre-schooler I lived on sub bases in New London, CT, Pensacola, FL, Oakland, CA, and San Diego, CA, where my brother Eric was born.

In 1952 Dad was given command of a submarine in Pearl Harbor, and I went to 1st and 2nd grades in Hawaii, where my brother Ron was born. There Dad bought, and learned to play, two ukuleles. This was significant.

We moved to the DC suburbs for two years (Pentagon duty), then drove across the country to Seattle and took ship to Yokusuka, Japan, where I attended 5th and 6th grades and took trumpet lessons. Also significantly, Dad bought a Hammond Chord Organ.

From Japan we returned to Honolulu, where Dad commanded a Submarine Division. Here I learned to play his ukulele and organ (hence the significance of those purchases), and also discovered rock'n'roll radio. Thus began my real interest in music, at the age of 12, in 7th grade.

Next stop was a three-year Pentagon stint, back in DC. Near the end, in my Sophomore year in highschool, was possibly the most significant incident of my musical life, when my family went "calling" on a neighboring Navy family. I knew the son of this family, who was a year behind me in school, but I didn't like him; a boor who bullied the smaller neighborhood kids. Though I had been dragged against my will on this "call", he had somehow escaped -- he was not around, and I was sent to his room to occupy myself with his things. And there was an electric guitar and a tiny amplifier! I sat there and picked out the melody to Ghost Riders in the Sky, and I was hooked.

A few months later, summer '62, my Dad became Operations Officer for NATO Submarine Command in Gosport, on the south coast of England. I bought a cheap acoustic guitar, and my parents met a retired Royal Army couple who had a son who played guitar. This new friend, Nick Prater, taught me Shadows tunes and Cliff Richard songs that summer. We each went off to boarding school, but England has long Christmas and Easter vacations when Nick and I would play music together. In 1963 the Beatles broke and we started learning their tunes. On a two-family vacation trip the next summer we performed several early Beatles hits at a casino cabaret in Biaritz, France (we were "English", the Beatles were the newest thing, so it didn't matter that we weren't very polished. We were even invited to a soirée at Chez Rothschild afterward!) During these years, I exchanged visits with a school chum, Dick MacEachern, son of a Canadian Air Force officer posted to London. We were the only Americans in Gosport and I was one of three Americans at boarding school, so I became deeply immersed in British youth culture in this era of Mods and Rockers, Carnaby Street, "Swinging London", and the British rock explosion. Nick and I would see the Manfred Mann Group in a pub in Southhampton on Tuesdays and in a pub in Portsmouth on Thursdays, and other big British blues groups who came through Gosport and the neighboring larger cities, and Dick and I would do the rounds of the London clubs when I visited.

Can you dig it? For my Junior and Senior highschool years I was learning to play guitar in England between the summers of '62 and '64! For an entire summer I watched Jack Bruce play bass twice a week, during his brief stint with the Manfred Mann Group!

In the winter of '64 I bought a cheap solid-body electric guitar. During Easter vacation my family took a roadtrip to explore Scandinavia, because my maternal grandmother was a Norwegian immigrant. Our first stop was Copenhagen, and in a music-shop window I saw a bass guitar neck, with a headstock that was certainly an infringement upon the Fender patent, marked at the Danish equivalent of £5 Sterling, or US$14.00. The shop was closed and we were leaving in the morning. I begged my father until he agreed that we could swing by there on our way out in the morning and still make our ferry to Sweden, and I bought that bass neck! Back home I fitted the neck to my solid-body guitar, and I had my first bass (see below, in the Five Dimensions photo)!

In the Fall of '64 I took this bass, a stereo component amp, and a homemade 1x15" cabinet off to college (The Five Dimensions, below), but after a year I dropped out to become a rock star in Maryland, while the Navy continued to move my family around. It took several years in several jobs to raise the money for pro-grade equipment; initially a Gibson EB0 bass and a Vox solid-state 2x12" combo amplifier. Eventually, in 1972 in the outskirts of Washington, DC, Dimitrius Hanft, Bruce Veverka, and I formed Whetstone (below), the best and most successful band I was ever in.

After Whetstone ended I was in several bands that showed little potential. The best were with Country & Western singers who gigged with pick-up bands from the pool of great players in the Washington DC area, to whom I was introduced by a wonderful pedal-steel player named Curry Coster, whom I knew from my day job in a print shop.

I decided to "retire" when I had failed to achieve national stature (i.e., was not rich and famous) by the age of thirty. To remove temptation, I sold every bit of musical equipment, except for two acoustic guitars. Man, I wish I still had that old Fender Precision Bass and Traynor amplifier! I became a journeyman in the print trade, but as I saw computers appearing in every part of the trade I signed up for an evening programming class. The adjunct professor instructing the class hired me, originally on a part-time basis, to work with him on Defense Department contracts, and I eventually took over 70 semester-hours of programming and math classes at Montgomery College. I've been a programmer/software engineer, and subsequently database designer and website programmer, for 15 years as a Defense contractor, and then for 15 years in medical research, unil I recently retired from the Wake Forest School of Medicine.

I began playing again in 2007, strictly with part-time bands, none of which really jelled until Ten After Ten in 2010. Throughout my life my three favorite pastimes are programming computers, paddling a whitewater canoe, and playing bass guitar: I programmed computers for a living; since July of 1992 I have spent over 1,500 days canoeing (or driving to and from Rocky Mountain or other remote canoe trips); and I have been a member of a number of rock bands throughout my life. Additionally, I have owned three motorcycles, and am likely to someday own another, and, having learned to shoot in Japan, I would also be a skeet- and target-shooter if I could find the time for yet another expensive pastime (Marines taught me to shoot rifles, sailors taught me to shoot pool, and an old Chief Petty Officer taught me to shoot skeet!)

Band: The Five Dimensions (Sept. '64 - May '65)
The Five Dimensions were Chuck Blackmon on guitar and lead vocals, Kenny Young on guitar, John Palladini on organ, Ed Kruse on drums, and me on bass.

This was my freshman year of college, from September, '64 to May, '65 at the University of Maryland extension campus for dependents of servicemen in Europe, where we were all students. The campus was located on a very small US facility named McGraw Caserne in Munich, Germany, which the students referred to as The Cobblestone Campus (which gave its name to The Cobblestone Four, a student folk-singing group for which I played the upright bass for a couple of special events). This was a wonderful year of music, girls, skiing, girls, beerhalls, girls, and touring Europe, but not so good for academics!

This was just as the British Invasion was striking the US. Of the British bands, we covered the blues-based rock groups like the Stones, Kinks, and Animals, but never the pop groups like The Beatles, Freddy and the Dreamers, or Gerry and the Pacemakers. Of American bands we covered surf groups like the Beach Boys and Ventures, and edgier or blues-based acts like the Kingsmen and Chuck Berry. We were definitely headed away from "pop" music toward what was to became known as "rock" music.

We played nearly every campus dance that year, and also played dances at American Army and Air Force base high schools and service clubs throughout southern Germany (and took a Spring Break "tour" of Belgium, Holland, England, and France, targeting teen clubs on US bases).

I'm sorry I have no recorded music of The Five Dimensions.

Band: Whetstone (May '72 - Aug. '75)
Whetstone was a Washington DC based power trio that worked for slightly over three years in the early '70s. We covered artists like Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones, the James Gang, the Allman Brothers Band, and Led Zeppelin, as well as writing and performing our own material, and we played in clubs and concerts along the East Coast from Maryland to South Carolina.

Whetstone consisted of Dimitrius Hanft on guitar and vocals, Bruce Veverka on drums, and me on bass. On the recordings below I also played the keyboards and sang the harmony part on Starbeck. These recordings below were essentially brand new material when we recorded them on a totally amateur setup. It's a pity we never had the chance to record them again in an actual recording studio, months or a year later when we had really honed and smoothed them after playing them regularly in clubs.

Whetstone was the one band I was ever in that had the talent to become a national act, but we just didn't know how to present and promote ourselves properly; if I had it to do again, I would urge Dimitrius and Bruce to move with me to Los Angeles where we would have had a far better chance at success. As you can hear on the recordings below, though we thought of ourselves as a "power trio" and covered that kind of band -- basically, blues-based rock music -- our original material clearly is firmly in the "progressive rock" domain.

I think Dimitrius is still playing with local bands in Myrtle Beach (he turned down a place in Alabama in the Fall of '75, before they broke big!), and Bruce is alive and well in Tucson, AZ, though, sadly, I don't think he still plays. These guys were both absolute monster players and it is a joy to have worked with them.

L to R: Dimitrius, me, and Bruce, in a club in Myrtle Beach, SC

Here are some recordings of Whetstone playing our own original material. Several of these were newly written and not yet fully learned, but we had a very brief window of opportunity to throw together the tapes. They were strictly amateur tapes, recorded in a basement on a standard household stereo 1/4" reel-to-reel recorder. The second guitar and keyboard parts were overdubbed while re-recording the basic tracks to a second stereo 1/4" recorder through a passive mixer I made (using a metal cookie-box as the chassis!) We only had time for a single take of each base track and a single take of each overdub track, and unfortunately the guitars suffered -- the best playing is on the base track because Dimitrius had to really rein in his playing on the overdub to keep from feeding back. So, unfortunately, what should have been the lead track is just fills, but they largely drown out the incredible rhythm playing. And in the end, I have no good examples of Dimitrius' amazing lead playing.

Band: Ten After Ten (Oct. '10 - Jan. '12)
From the fall of 2010 to the spring of 2012, Ten After Ten was a Classic Rock group with Alternative Rock tendencies. We were Bobby Rouse as lead vocalist, Rich Williams on guitar, keyboards, and vocals, Roland Westgate on guitar, John Drake on drums and vocals, and me on bass.

Bobby and Roland both had some good original material which we had intended to work up, but Bobby got jammed up with extended-family responsibilities and had to quit. Since the band was built around his singing, we fell apart when he had to leave.

I was really impressed with the talent and chops of everyone in this band. I understand that Bobby is singing with a praise band now, which I think absolutely suits the kind of guy he is. I subsequently played with Rich in Whitehorse, and with John in SouthWind. Roland's children have reached an age where he needs to go on hiatus for a few years before he will have the free time to join another band.

Here are a few recordings of Ten After Ten playing other peoples' tunes:

Band: Whitehorse (Feb. '12 - Sept. '12)
In 2012 Whitehorse played Classic Rock and Contemporary Pop/Rock. We were Victoria Tollman, lead vocals, Rich Williams, guitar, keyboards, and vocals, Scarlett Tollman, piano, me on bass, and a revolving cast of drummers. It was the fact that DJ, our part-time drummer, could not commit to our band on a full-time basis that led Victoria to give up and quit.

I am sorry I don't have more recorded material from this excellent band; Victoria left just as we had developed an adequate playlist for gigging, and we had just begun to put together a marketing package. We had recorded these four songs and had pictures taken, but had not yet prepared a demo disc.

Band: SouthWind (Sept. '12 - April '13)
SouthWind was a Classic Rock group with Country Rock tendencies. We were Mike Priestly on lead vocals and guitar, Maryann Drake on vocals, Dave Thompson on guitar and vocals, John Drake on drums and vocals, and me on bass and, later, vocals.

We lost John and Maryann in March, 2013, when our sound man got into a fight with John at a gig, probably ruining our chances of ever playing at that venue again. I said that I would not work with that sound man again (no matter whose fault the fight was). At about the same time I discovered my old Whetstone tapes and liked my harmony singing on "Starbeck". Since the bass parts in country rock are not very challenging, and the Whetstone tape had just reminded me that I actually can sing harmony, and since there was a big gaping hole in the vocals where Maryann used to be, I started singing backup parts. Mike and Dave told me I sounded good.

Just weeks later Mike hired the same sound man for a forthcoming gig. This sound man is a prince when he's sober, but no-one exhibits good judgement when he is drunk, and this guy drinks a lot. I agreed to do this gig since Mike had already committed to the guy, but in the end SouthWind and I parted ways because I disagreed so vigorously about the wisdom of this decision.

Too bad; we were rebounding nicely with new drummer Doc Lawrence and a new backup singer (me). And Dave is a machine on rhythm guitar (and an easy-going and witty bandmate); I knew that if I ever got lost I would be able to immediately pick up my place from Dave. I'll miss playing with SouthWind, but as much as I like playing with a tight, familiar unit, it will be fun to learn new tunes with a new group of musicians. SouthWind gave me a stylistic change from Whitehorse and Ten After Ten, so I look forward to yet another style of music, maybe.

Here are a few recordings of SouthWind playing other peoples' tunes:
01. In My Own Way (The Marshall Tucker Band, 1980) - SouthWind (Mike)

Band: Cool Hand (Oct. '13 - Jan. '14)
In the fall of 2013 I was briefly with a band, Cool Hand, that never really jelled; good musicians, but an inexperienced front-man singing lead.

Cool Hand was Chris Scott, vocals; Roy Palencar, guitar; Rich Williams, guitar, keyboards, and vocals; Jack Cullen, drums; and me on bass and back-up vocals.

I had never sung before SouthWind, except for an overdub on one Whetstone tune, but most bands I've been in have too many musicians who don't sing, and most cover bands are weakest in the vocals, so this year I've begun teaching myself to coordinate singing with my playing. Unfortunately, all the SouthWind recordings, above, were made before I began singing.

The recording quality here is pretty bad; I include these because they are the only recorded examples I have of myself singing. The high harmonies are me. I made these recordings with my ZOOM digital recorder, from several different positions within a very small rehearsal space, so the levels vary (this recorder gave me much better results for Whitehorse in the larger practice space at my house).

Band: ZB Rhythm Project (Jan. '14 - April '14)
The ZB Rhythm Project, named for Zia Bhatti (pronounced "botty", so I refered to us as "the Z-Bots") were Rich Williams, guitar, lead and back-up vocals; Kevin McInturff, keyboards, lead and back-up vocals; me, bass and back-up vocals; Jack Cullen, drums; Zia Bhatti, congas and misc. percussion. Additionally, we were continuously on the lookout for a front man: either a male or a female lead singer.

We were not aiming to be a bar-band, though we bagan with a playlist of common Classic Rock tunes that everybody knows, many of which are well-suited to bar-band gigs. We planned that once we had enough basic material to accept any immediate gigging opportunities we would upgrade our playlist with a number of dance tunes and recent pop-rock tunes so we could posture ourselves for working weddings, corporate functions, fraternity parties, service clubs, wine festivals, etc.

We never really settled into a collective musical identity because of this divergence of goals: Classic Rock vs. more Pop-style dance music. We were hoping that the inclusion of a talented hand-drummer/percussionist would give us a different sound and help us carve out a unique niche in the Piedmont music scene. Unfortunately, Zia had pressing family issues arise and had to drop out, and then this difference in goals led the rest of us to drop the project.

As with Whitehorse and Cool Hand, we were approaching stage ready when we disbanded, so I have no photos, videos, nor good recordings (I made these recordings at early practice sessions, so we could hear exactly what we needed to work on). As with the Cool Hand recordings, I include these sketchy clips only to show that my high harmonies have potential, if I ever get the chance to really work on my singing with a band.

Band: SouthWind (Oct. '14 - Dec. '17)
SouthWind has re-formed; still a Classic Rock group with Country Rock tendencies (and Mouse has brought a few Nashville country tunes along with her). We are Mike Priestly on lead and harmony vocals and guitar, Marian 'Mouse' Metzinger on lead and harmony vocals, Dave Thompson on guitar and vocals, Hal Lackey on drums and vocals, and me on bass and vocals, with Keith Herrington, our sound engineer, also singing backup from the mixing board and stepping up on stage for some lead vocals. Mouse eventually left and was replaced by Dan Voller on keyboards and lead & harmony vocals.

Band: Retrospect (Jan. '18 - present)

Retrospect was formed when guiter-player Rich Williams (Ten After Ten, Whitehorse, Cool Hand, and ZB Rhythm Project) called and told me he had met Rick Kearns, a singer who wanted to form a band. As a second lead singer we recruited keyboard player Dan Voller, whom I had worked with in Southwind, and for drums we were lucky enough to get Jack Cullen, whom I had worked with in the short-lived Cool Hand. Rick left us in May, 2018, and we were lucky enough to find Tommy Difato almost immediately, as our replacement front man. Dan left us in March, 2019 and we are working as a quartet while we listen to other singers. We work well as a quartet, with Tommy singing lead and the rest of us singing backup, so we will not rush to hire another singer until we find someone really good -- preferably, but not necessarily, a woman, and best of all a woman who plays keyboards.

Retrospect at Old Nick's Pub, June 16, 2018.

Songs I've played since 2008
This list includes stage-ready material that I performed publicly, as well as songs that were under development which I learned and the band rehearsed but which were never performed. It also includes songs I learned for auditions with bands which I never joined, and songs which I learned for supporting singers at open-mic sessions. There are over 650 songs listed below.

I had well-developed parts for everything on this list. Most of them I could not play today without a few run-throughs to refresh my memory, but I still have MP3's and chord charts for all of these and I could have any 40 or 50 songs from this list stage-ready with just a week or so of run-thoughs (or, say, 30 of these songs, plus 10 or 12 new ones).
